Salt Generators

View Description

Rather than adding chlorine to a swimming pool manually, you may decide to install a salt generator (also referred to as a chlorinator) in your pool. A pool chlorinator works by reacting salt (sodium chloride, or NaCl) with water through electrolysis to produce the chlorine compounds that are used to sanitize pools, so all you have to do is fill it up with salt and let it do its own thing. Because a salt generator produces chlorine continuously, it is able to outweigh the formation of chloramines – potentially harmful chemicals that are formed when chlorine reacts with sweat – with fresh chlorine. The process of electrolysis also breaks down these chemicals and, from them, reforms the chlorine-based compounds that kill bacteria. This gives it a significant advantage over manual chlorination, in which you would have to solve this problem by regularly shocking the pool (i.e. adding a large amount of chlorine for a short time).

A pool chlorinator comes in two parts: the cell, which fits into your pool’s plumbing and contains the electrodes that perform the reaction, and a control panel. The control panel is used to determine the amount of chlorine to be released into the pool. Some include special scheduling features.

Models of pool salt generators vary in a few different ways. One way they can vary is the type of salt they require. Some salt generators can literally be filled up with ordinary table salt. Others require mineral salt. Some mineral salts have special features, such as added mineral ingredients that perform additional functions outside of simply chlorinating the pool – be sure to research all the options. Some chlorinators also have additional functionality to regulate the pH (or acidity) of pool water.
